Welcome to #APSVotes Runoff Edition, where we’re highlighting the only item on the ballot –– the Seat 7 At-Large position on the Atlanta Board of Education, which governs Atlanta Public Schools. Atlanta Civic Circle and Capital B Atlanta are partnering to deliver original reporting that unpacks why the election is too important to ignore.

Why is there an election this year? In 2021, the law was changed to implement staggered terms, so this year, five of the nine–odd-numbered districts–Atlanta School Board seats are up for election. In 2025, the even-numbered districts will be up for election, along with the mayor and City Council.
Why is there a runoff election? A runoff occurs when no single candidate receives 50% plus one of the votes. The top two vote-getters advance to the runoff election. Seat 7 is a citywide seat. Every eligible Atlanta voter can and should vote in the runoff election.
Why you should vote: Atlanta Public Schools is one of the largest school districts in the south, with nearly 50,000 students. The Atlanta School Board oversees a budget that’s double the size of the city of Atlanta’s budget that Mayor Andre Dickens and the City Council approve. In addition to the budget, board members hire and fire the school superintendent and also vote on policies.
