Here’s what to know for today:
- After nearly two years, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport lifted its mask mandate. The world’s busiest airport dropped the mandate after a federal judge in Florida ruled that it wasn’t legally sound. MARTA also followed suit, announcing it would no longer enforce its mask mandate.
- County employees in Rockdale County are in line for a wage bump. Employees either had their hourly wage raised to $15, or received an 8% increase to help employees catch up with market wages. The change came as a result of a study to ensure the county remained competitive in the metro Atlanta job market.
- Instead of voting to fix building deficiencies at Druid Hills High School, the DeKalb County Board of Education voted 5-2 to revamp how it would fix schools in the entire district. The vote came after a student video showing electricity dangers, ceiling leaks, and other physical deficiencies in the building went viral. The video also prompted leaders from the Georgia Department of Education to visit the school.
- Decatur got a new police chief. The City Commission on Monday confirmed interim Police Chief Scott Richards, who was the only finalist in the running. Richards was named deputy police chief in 2016, then served as interim police chief when Mike Booker retired from the post last year.
ICYMI: The deadline for the Atlanta Resurgence Grant is quickly approaching. Small businesses who lost money due to pandemic-related challenges can apply for grants up to $40,000. Small businesses and nonprofit owners have until this Friday, April 29, to apply. Applications can be found here.
