Media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey surprised Morehouse College students with a pop-up visit they won’t soon forget.

Over the weekend, seniors at the all-men’s college gathered for a pregraduation dinner and were greeted by a special guest who had helped make many of their college journeys possible.

In 1989, the talk show icon established the Oprah Winfrey Scholars program at Morehouse and has changed hundreds of students’ lives as a result.

It’s also had an impact on Winfrey herself.

“This has been a great, great joy for me. Just a joy. Such a reward,” Winfrey said as she tried to hold back tears. “I feel so rewarded by every single young man who has spoken here today.”

During the lunch, Morehouse scholars had a chance to share their journeys with many saying without Winfrey’s help they would not have been able to attend college.

According to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the investment has paid for the education of nearly 800 Morehouse graduates, covering tuition, fees, and room and board.

Winfrey called the Morehouse program “the proudest investment” she’s ever made.

“You all have already made the return on the investment for me,” she said. “And I thank you for that, because you honor not only my name, Oprah Winfrey and the scholarship program, but you honor everybody who ever prayed you up.”

The Morehouse College graduation is May 19.
