The tragic death of an Atlanta-area educator after falling from a Six Flags Over Georgia roller coaster has generated an outpouring of support for the grieving family.
Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem “was ejected” from the Goliath coaster at the Austell amusement park and “struck other patrons before falling beneath the attraction,” a preliminary investigation report revealed Oct. 12.
The 42-year-old father was at the park with his wife, children, and some friends. His son was reportedly riding next to him at the time of the incident.
According to the Associated Press, at least six other riders have died on roller coasters in the U.S. since 2003.
Kariem worked as an information technology manager at Wesley International Academy. He also served as a volunteer coach for the school’s robotics team.
“Atlanta Public Schools extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. Kariem,” the district said in a statement.
“He was a cherished member of the Wesley International Academy and APS families whose presence and impact will be deeply missed by our students, staff, and all those whose lives he touched,” APS continued. “Our thoughts are with everyone mourning his loss during this difficult time.”

Local and state politicians also offered condolences. Mayor Andre Dickens issued the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life at Six Flags Over Georgia. What should have been a day of excitement ended in heartbreak. On behalf of the City of Atlanta, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost his life. My thoughts and prayers are also with those who were injured or witnessed this tragic incident. During this difficult time, we stand with everyone affected by this tragedy and hope they find comfort in the days ahead.”
Republican gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson also shared his condolences.
“A life committed to raising up the next generation of leaders was devastatingly cut short and I join Georgians in expressing my deepest condolences. As authorities investigate what caused this tragedy, I am keeping the Kariem family in my thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.”
Democratic gubernatorial nominee and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms called for accountability during an interview on CNN.
“By all accounts, he was a beloved educator and father. I can’t imagine. My first job was actually at Six Flags. … People across the country, when they go to an amusement park, it’s supposed to be about fun and enjoyment. … I can say that, you know, there has to be answers to this as to how a man, a 42-year-old man can be thrown from a roller coaster.”
The Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is investigating the incident.
